Colorado Bench and Echo Park D.S. Ride 2008
My wife and I camped at Green River Campground near Jensen, UT by the river. We found a wonderful site steps from the river that was secluded by bushes and spacious. Since Ann does not ride, but likes to sit in the sun and read, I took my leave and went for a bit of an exploration ride on the KLR. I had no maps save the cheesy park map I received upon entering the Natl. Park. It'd have to do.
The ride from Steamboat to Jensen, Utah was kinda dull and very windy. There is not much to see along the way, lots of high desert and sage brush. The campground was really nice and not very crowded. We found a great spot right at the river and with lots of privacy.

The first stop of the day was at the Josie Bassett Morris cabin near Hog Canyon. This is a cool old homestead that was occupied for many years. It is really nice and pleasant here in the shade an by a small stream.
From here, I worked my way up onto Blue Mountain. The road is a bit rough and loose but nothing a KLR or similar bike can't handle easily.

Once at the top of the climb the road turns to nice graded gravel. The only problem was that there were numerous roads but no signs. Since my map did not cover any of this area, I had the bright idea that I'd take digital photos of each intersection and of my odometer so that I could find my way back if I got turned around. Fortunately, I found my way across the top of the high plain to bisect the Dinosaur Natl. Monument road.
Once I hit the Monument road, I followed it north to the overlook and found the dirt road that drops down to Sand Canyon and leads to the road to Echo Park and the Colorado Bench road. It was a really nice switch-backey kinda road that was a real hoot on a D.S. bike.

A short distance beyond Sand Canyon was the intersection to Echo Park. The road looked interesting and I'd heard may good things about the area over the years so I decided to go and check it out. It was definitely worth the time. The ride down through the canyon was gorgeous and I found some petroglyphs along the way.
An old sheep station along the way.
Petroglyphs on the rock along the road to the canyon entrance.
Whispering Cave. You can feel the cool air coming from the cave from the road about 50 or more feet away. You can also go inside the cave and look directly up inside the rock. Way cool.
